About Maine Metalsmiths
Our Beginnings
A long time ago it all began with Nancy Linkin and her passion to form metal by hammering. Nancy held a love for flowers and plants inspiring her creation of anticlastic jewelry. Anticlastic means curving in two directions like the forms of petals, leaves and tendrils. Nancy enjoyed dancing, gardening and walks in the woods. The flowing rhythms and forms all contributing to her anticlastic jewelry. Nancy’s work became well known, so much so that she needed an assistant. Nancy found a talented metalsmith whom she ended up working with for over thirty years. That metalsmith, also tool maker, woodworker, sailor and gardener was Luke Sunde. During this lengthy carrier Nancy battled cancer. Nancy never let this slow her down nor hinder her creativity. In the last six years of her life Nancy enlisted the help of a jeweler, friend and neighbor, Elizabeth Allen. Elizabeth helped making jewelry, book keeping and keeping Nancy Linkin Designs running.
Liz & Luke
On passing Nancy willed her business to Luke. Elizabeth had run her own jewelry business, Maine Gem Gallery, in Camden for over thirty years and also had experience with Nancy’s business. So they both decided to start a 50/50 partnership, Maine Metalsmiths LLC. Liz and Luke continue to produce the line of Nancy Linkin’s anticlastic jewelry in her memory. Also they have added new pieces using the same techniques and vision.
